It is contain one of the three components to find the true cure, if not obtained, the good ending is unavailable and resort to three bad endings: surrender to the government, destroy the government and go insane or nuke Vancouver.
Plot[]
During the protagonist time in the city, they receive some news on a certain van Nooten from various clues collected in the city: a Dutch diary, Gustav rumors, old newspaper and missing pets in mall pet store.
With the Signposts researched, a European scientist of the name of Gretchin arrived outside the fort and join the protagonist fort. However, her time in the fort proved her to be uncooperative and hostile as she refused to share her backstory and asking to be left alone. One day, she visited an injured survivor to find him zombified despite no bites on him.
One day, she attacked a fellow survivor when they killed a rat while cleaning the storeroom. The protagonist can either discuss whether she can stay or leave but she will leave the fort nevertheless.

From the investigation in the hospital, they find that her full name is Isa Gretchin von Nooten (I.G von Nooten) who wanted her blood to investigated and reported to have a coma. However, her blood is tested to be normal yet the nurses were sick during the testing and found missing the night after testing. Soon, the trail lead to an anthropology department of the city college where the protagonist hope to find the mysterious scientist.
In the college, they investigate her office to find it filled with wall notes covered in blood with dead rats, burning herbs and ritual figures. They find the scientist is the same Gretchin who left the fort sleeping under the desk.

When he came back, he brought an animal's blood that supposed to kill Gretchin and Ruben but it failed with Hendrik dead according to the newspaper clue.
The dead rats was revealed to be her attempt of finding a cure with the ritual another vain attempt to find a solution. The blood was dark liquid and was used to poison both Isa and Ruben. It is revealed that Hendrik knew about the affair and have an ill attempt to turn his wife into zombie to have her eternal affection.
Walkthrough[]
Preparation[]
First you need to start in a suitable location. It is recommended to start in Nelson, Penticton, Kelowna or Chilliwack. It is more challenging, but entirely possible to complete the quest line in tighter cities like Wenatchee or Spokane. The cities that are confirmed that the quest won't initiate are Snoqualmie, Hope, Abbotsford and Vancouver. Snoqualmie is a tutorial city with many of the unavailable components to initiate the quest: faction to obtain the book and Signpost research. Hope and Abbotsford are unavailable due to the cities more story focused on the cure with Vancouver city being the final city and the false cure being spread around the city. Remember that incomplete quest will reset the quest progress when moving to another city.
Now for the preparation, you need a Unscavenged/Unreclaimed Mall to scavenge, a Cricket Bat to trade and Unreclaimed Motel. Without those, the quest would be incomplete. Depending on where the mall and motel are and when/if you plan to reclaim them without negatively impacting the quest line, you could place traps on the buildings to keep the zed numbers down.
Clues[]
You need to collect all 4 clues in one city playthrough to proceed with the quest. You need at least two clues to trigger Gretchin arrival and collect all four clues before she leaves the fort.
Diary Clue[]
To receive the diary clue, you need at least 5 schools and a city hall to receive the books event. It is recommended to build more than 5 schools to increase the chance of triggering the event. A city hall is required to access the mission to meet with the faction, you must not ally with the faction as allying will cancel all missions with the allied faction. You must not declare war too as the faction is too hostile to trigger diplomacy.
Once you received the books event, you have two options: Non Fiction Textbooks or Fiction Books. The clues option would be the Fiction Books as you receive the diary clue. Choosing the non fiction textbooks would let you receive a special science book (check equipment for more details).
The dairy will be in Dutch, talking about an affair guilt with people involved: Hendrik and Ruben. (Translated Text: Quarrel with Ruben. Hendrik will soon return from Haiti. It's time we told him, but Ruben doesn't want that.)
Newspaper Clue[]
For the newspaper clue, you need an engineer and a zombie mob to receive it. You need one of the engineer accompany in a mission near an approaching zombie mob to trigger the event. One reliable method is to have an engineer in your primary 4-5 person squad do the mission as they will be forced to retreat with minimal risk of injury or death.
From there, the event would receive the newspaper clue. Choose Read On for the complete clue, there is no benefit in choosing the Run option.
The newspaper report on the zombie origin where the reporter believed it is unaffiliated with a Dutch cult and reported that Hendrik and Ruben are the first victims.
Cricket Clue[]
This clue is the hardest to obtain as you require a Cricket Bat to trade with Gustav.
To obtain the Cricket Bat, you need either need luck in your scavenging or complete a miscellaneous quest for guaranteed Cricket Bat. If you got one in a previous city playthrough, especially in Snoqualmie while building your primary squad, keep it on one of your squad members until you are ready to complete this quest line to remove the hassle of luck.
The quest is called Blood and Ice Cream and is a one-time event. You need an 8-12 mart to receive it.
Once you got the bat, give it to Gustav but be sure to not have the Negotiator perk as it will skip the event.
From there, Gustav will mention a van Nooten when talking about cricket.
Pet Store Clue[]
This clue is the easiest to obtain as you only need high scavenging skill and unreclaimed mall. Your first need to scavenge the mall and have at least 10 scavenging skill to trigger the event.
With the event, you receive three option on what to do after the mission. The clue option would be the pet store. The toy store option would give each scavenger +20 Happiness while kill zombies instead option clear the zone. The event is a one-time.
The pet store clue revealed that the rats and monkey pets are missing from the store with papers with a name laying in the floor.
Gretchin in Fort[]
Now for the quest itself, you need to collect at least 2 clues and research Signpost to get Gretchin event. But be sure to collect 4 clues before she leaves or else the quest would be incomplete.
Once you have Gretchin, collect the remaining clues if possible. You have a time limit when you trigger the injured survivor event. You need a survivor of your choosing to sacrifice to Gretchin, it is recommended to be someone who is low skilled. It also recommended to have dangerous risk to increase chance of injury, from there Gretchin will approach the injured survivor and turn him into a zombie, causing one casualty.
After the injured survivor event, you have a time limit (14-40 days) before another event which will kick Gretchin out of the fort. This is where Gretchin attack another survivor for killing a rat. Regardless whether you want Gretchin to stay or leave, she will leave the fort.
Investigation Phase[]
From there, you need an unreclaimed motel to continue the quest. This is where it starts to be easy.
Do any mission in the area to find that Gretchin is in the area. From there you are redirected to a hospital which can be spawned if unavailable in the map. The investigation will lead you to a school (university) that can spawn if unavailable. From there you can meet Gretchin and she will reveal the cause of the zombie apocalypse, she will either be missing or committed suicide. Either way, you will receive the Monkey Blood, one of three components needed for the true cure.
Congratulations![]
If you managed to get to this point in-game, then congratulations. To complete the good ending, make sure that you also obtained Agbayani's Research from Wentachee and the European Datadump from Penticton.
More details[]
- If part of your playthrough includes obtaining as many perks for your leader as possible, it is possible to "lock in" your acquisition of the vial by completing a different city down the road or replaying an earlier city, but replaying the city you got the vial in beforehand will likely wipe your progress, so if you got the vial in a city that has exclusive perks, do a different city first and then come back for the perk.
- Or better yet, save getting the vial for a run in which you are also getting the last perk offered by the city in question and never play that city again if you want to keep the vial and the perk.
- It is unknown whether or not letting Gretchen kill herself has any follow-on effects further along in Story Mode. Fun fact: when you finish this, Gretchen's status changes from "left the fort" to "went mad."
- After you create the true cure in Vancouver, it is still possible to commence the mission to activate the nuke if you find the silo at any point, but your PC will note that they have no reason to ever want to activate it. So instead, the "arm the nuke" mission will end with the survivors disarming the nuke and then permanently barricading the entrance to the silo with poured concrete.
